Dr David McArthur, Associate Director for Training and Capacity Building at UBDC and Senior Lecturer in Transport Studies at the University of Glasgow, will present at this event from Policy Scotland for the 2020 ESRC Festival of Social Science.
This webinar aims to discuss the academic evidence and arguments for and against radical policy changes that might solve problems arising from the COVID-19 crisis in three areas of policy: housing, transport and welfare. Three social scientists at the University of Glasgow will be presenting their work:
- Professor Mark Stephens will share his research on Universal Basic Income, including his work modelling the impacts of a potential UBI.
- Dr David McArthur will be sharing new evidence on sustainable transport and what it means for reshaping city centres as we know them.
- Dr David Waite will explore how the Covid-19 crisis is shaping urban economies, and, will consider what may emerge from the crisis in terms of changing patterns of firm and worker behaviours what options policymakers may choose to take in response.
With a suite of academics alongside representatives from other civil society sectors, we aim to discuss the merits of what some say are ‘radical’ policy proposals grounded in evidence from social scientists. The seminar will be of interest to academics, advocacy organisations and think tanks, and the general public – as it will engage with issues relevant to the material circumstances of people today.
The webinar will highlight the work of three academic teams from the University of Glasgow with time for discussion amongst participants about the policy ideas.
