About the role
You will play a central role in the development and delivery of a crucial part of the Urban Big Data Centre’s (UBDC) data service: enhancing access to personal data from administrative systems. The Urban Big Data Centre is an ESRC data investment, funded as part of its Big Data programme. You are likely to be a social scientist or social statistician with a desire to help researchers to get the maximum value from these kinds of data. The principle role for this post is to act as the key point of contact between researchers, data owners (e.g. local government or other public or voluntary sector organisations) and eDRIS who provide the secure data environment for storing sensitive data. You will require knowledge of the various kinds of administrative data likely to be held by public, private or voluntary sector organisations working in the urban field, an awareness of legal requirements governing the sharing of this data for research purposes, and an understanding of the social research process, particularly quantitative methods. You will also need to appreciate the challenges involved in data extraction and linkage. You will report to the Associate Director with responsibility for developing this aspect of the service but will also be expected to work closely with the rest of the IT and scientific computing team and with colleagues in eDRIS.
