As IT Service Officer you will be responsible for managing IT systems in the Urban Big Data Centre - a facility within the University of Glasgow’s College of Social Sciences funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as part of the Big Data Network Phase 2 – Business and Local Data. The Centre’s work focuses on developing big data management solutions and processes for managing the data, delivering to stakeholders a range of data products and services.
Under the supervision of the Centre’s Senior IT and Data Services Manager, or independently, you will work to set up and administer systems and services and will support the work of the Centre’s research, administrative and scientific computing staff as well as external users from other Universities and institutions.
The position requires excellent IT skills in hardware support and installation, management of server and cluster infrastructure and good problem solving skills - with a particular aptitude to interpreting a problem/project and applying IT solutions. Comprehensive current knowledge of IT standards, systems and provision in order to support the secure delivery of research and teaching in an academic environment is also needed, along with programming knowledge in shell scripts e.g. bash, Python.
The ideal candidate will have at least 4 years’ experience in an IT related discipline with qualifications or evidence of progression and development.
