Des was closely involved in the successful bid to ESRC for the Urban Big Data Centre and has led the Knowledge Exchange and outreach activities of the centre since it was established in January 2014. His role is to co-ordinate the impact and communication strategy for the centre, liaising between academics, research users and the wider policy community, to increase awareness and uptake of research by policy makers and practitioners, and to identify new opportunities for collaboration and make them happen.
By background, Des is a sociologist and public policy specialist with more than 20 years experience in research and teaching within the higher education sector. He also has extensive experience of working with policy makers, having been a senior politician within local government, chair of the most important scrutiny committee in the Scottish Parliament and a Minister in the Scottish Government. His public policy expertise is drawn on not just by the UBDC, he is Deputy Director of Policy Scotland, the outward facing Public Policy centre established in 2013 by the university of Glasgow.
Des’ areas of expertise include policy analysis and knowledge exchange. He regularly is asked to give presentations on these issues to a wide range of audiences. He manages Glasgow’s ESRC Impact Acceleration Account, which channels resources to promote collaboration between social science researchers and research users in government, business and the voluntary sector. As a former member of the Greater Glasgow Health Board, Des has a particular interest in health and social care issues and he is a member of the statutory Scotland Committee of the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
