Transport and mobility
Our datasets help researchers and planners to better understand travel patterns, footfall, the public transport network, traffic flows, and cycling. This understanding can help identify problems, design solutions, and evaluate interventions.
Public transport data
We have drawn together a variety of open data to produce a suite of public transport accessibility indicators. The original set of indicators covers Great Britain and shows how easy it is to read different amenities (e.g. jobs, healthcare, retail) from different locations. The data collection also includes a travel time matrix which supports additional types of analysis as well as the construction of custom indicators. More details, including validation of the dataset, can be found here. The code is available on the UBDC’s GitHub page.
To allow researchers to understand how public transport service levels are changing over time, we have been collecting an archive of timetable data. We archive GTFS (General Transit Feed Specification) data from the Bus Open Data Service covering local public transport services in Great Britain, such as buses, trams, and ferries. Similar data is archived from the Traveling National Dataset (TNDS) in TransXChange format. Data for rail services is archived from the Rail Delivery Group. Additional rail data is available from the Rail Data Marketplace.
Active travel data
As part of our work to evaluate active travel investments, we designed a system to use CCTV cameras to count pedestrians in way that protects people’s privacy. The system also counts a variety of other types of travel including buses, cars, cyclists, crowds, lorries, motorcycles, taxis and vans. The count data from our pilot project in Glasgow is openly available. There is also a technical note giving more details about the project.
We also have historic data from the Strava activity tracking app. The data covers January 2013 to March 2020. The geographic coverage varies over time, but we have data from Scotland in addition to Manchester and Tyne and Wear. Strava now provides direct access to their data to selected partners. Data on cycle counts and surveys in Scotland can be obtained from Cycling Scotland. Other useful resources are the Propensity to Cycle Tool for England & Wales and the Network Planning Tool for Scotland.
Mobile phone data
UBDC has acquired location data from smartphone apps by working with Huq industries. The data are not sharable, in part due to privacy concerns, but we are working on validating the data and deriving sharable datasets. An example of this is our mobility metrics covering Greater Glasgow from 2019 to 2021. More derived datasets on mobility and travel behaviour will be added to this collection.
