iMCD Project Webinar: Linking multimedia city data
On the 12th April, UBDC researchers Dr Mark Livingston, iMCD Programme Manager, and Research Associate, Katarzyna Sila-Nowicka (Sila), led an online webinar for over 30 participants about the UBDC's innovative integrated Multimedia City Data (iMCD) project.
The webinar was hosted in collaboration with the UK Data Service as part of a series showcasing research using new and novel forms of data.
The webinar consisted of a 30-minute presentation, in which Sarah King-Hele introduced Phase 2 of the Big Data Network and highlighted the research opportunities and potential of the data available through the Network.
Mark and Sila continued by providing an overview of the iMCD Project: Linking multimedia city data. The iMCD project involves the collection and collation of a wide range of data from social media, traffic sensors, CCTV, GPS, local newspapers and other sources in Glasgow. Together, this information will create a detailed picture of mobility and the local environment in the city.
An innovative aspect of the project is that it combines this information with thousands of primary surveys on literacy, travel, stated preferences and an Attitude, Beliefs and Lifestyle Survey. The effort will also allow researchers to compare and contrast results from extracted structured and unstructured data with data from a statistically representative sample of respondents who are administered a battery of social science surveys. This will provide a more complete analysis of the complex links between behaviour, social background and daily routine among city residents.
The research aims to provide planners, local authorities and other stakeholders with a valuable and accessible data source. The integration of information on lifestyle and other individualised factors such as education will also support the development of targeted behavioural interventions to positively influence well being.
